On-Grid Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant consist of Solar Panel and On-Grid Solar Inverter (also called Grid-tied inverter). The On-Grid solar inverter is connected to grid line via electric Wh meter.

When the Sun shines, Solar Panles produces electricity and On-Grid inverter converts the DC power into AC power. The converted AC power is then fed into grid line through electric Wh meter.


The On-Grid inverter functions only when it senses that grid power is available. If grid power fails, it turns itself off and discontinue feeding electrical power to grid lines. Thus, on-grid solar power plant works only if grid power is available.




Operation of Off-Grid Plant

Off-Grid Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant consist of Solar Panel, Off-Grid Solar Inverter and Battery.

When the Sun shines, Solar Panel produces electricity and Off-grid inverter charges the batteries connected to it. At the same time, it converts the DC power being received from solar panels into AC power and drives load.


The Off-Grid Solar Inverter has ability to charge the batteries, by using solar power as well as grid power. However, priority is given to solar power so that grid power may be used as little as possible.


Since Off-Grid Solar Inverter do not feed electricity to grid lines, it keeps working even after grid power fails.


Key differences in On-Grid and Off-Grid Plants

On-Grid

Off-Grid

Power produced from plant is fed into grid lines.

Power produced from plant is used to drive load and excess power is stored into batteries.

When power in grid lines fails, power plant shuts itself off.

No impact of power failure in grid lines.

Batteries act as power bank.

Inverter capacity is not dependent on actual load, because load is driven by grid power.

Inverter capacity must be higher than highest load that may be connected to it, because load is driven by inverter.

Ultimate goal is to be self-reliant even in absence of grid power.

Maintenance cost is negligible.

Batteries needs to be replaced after few years.

Cost is lesser than Off-Grid Solar Plant.

Cost is higher than On-Grid power plant.

If you have regular power supply from grid, with little possibility of it to fail then you may go for On-Grid Solar PV Plant. Your goal here is to produce electricity for yourself and reduce electricity bill.


However, if you have irregular power supply from grid then Off-Grid Solar PV Plant shall be your choice. Your goal is not only to produce electricity for yourself, but to store it as well, for later use.
